Time zone basics
What is a time zone
A time zone is a region of the world that shares the same standard time. Time zones are usually written as an offset from Coordinated Universal Time, for example UTC+8 or UTC-5.
What is UTC and GMT
UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time. It is the main reference time used worldwide. GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. For daily use you can treat UTC and GMT as the same base time, usually written as UTC+0 or GMT 0.
Why do you see UTC+8, UTC-5 and so on
The plus or minus number tells you how many hours that place is ahead of or behind UTC. For example, if UTC is 12:00 and a city is UTC+8, then the local time there is 20:00. If a city is UTC-5, the local time is 07:00.
What is Daylight Saving Time (DST)
Some countries move their clocks forward by one hour during part of the year to extend evening daylight. This is called Daylight Saving Time. When DST is active, the offset can change, for example London is usually UTC+0 but becomes UTC+1 during summer.
Does this converter handle DST
Yes. The converter uses your browser time zone engine and standard IANA time zone identifiers like Europe/London or America/New_York. When a region switches into or out of DST, the offset and converted time are adjusted automatically.
