FD Laddering & Portfolio Manager
Track multiple fixed deposits across banks, see your weighted average FD rate and maturity map, and simulate laddering strategies to balance liquidity and returns.
1. Add your existing fixed deposits
| FD | Principal (RM) | Rate (% p.a.) | Tenure (months) | Start date | Action |
|---|
| FD | Principal (RM) | Rate (% p.a.) | Tenure (months) | Start date | Maturity date | Interest (RM) | Maturity amount (RM) |
|---|
1. Laddering strategy setup
| Rung | Tenure (months) | Rate (% p.a.) |
|---|
This simulator uses simple interest and does not reinvest maturing FDs. In reality, a rolling ladder typically reinvests each matured FD into the longest rung.
Set your total amount, ladder interval and rungs on the left, then add rates for each rung. The summary will compare the initial ladder to a single long FD and list each rung's maturity.
| Rung | Amount (RM) | Tenure (months) | Rate (% p.a.) | Interest (RM) | Maturity date | Maturity amount (RM) |
|---|
What is FD laddering and why do people use it
FD laddering is a way of splitting a lump sum into several fixed deposits with different maturity dates. Instead of locking all your money into one long FD, you create a ladder of shorter and longer tenures. When one rung matures, you can either spend the cash or roll it into a new long rung. Over time this helps you reduce liquidity risk and smooth out interest rate risk.
Why a single FD is not always the best choice
Putting everything into one long FD can be tempting because the rate is usually higher. However, if you need money before maturity, you may face early withdrawal penalties or lose interest. If market rates rise after you lock in a low rate, your opportunity cost is also higher. Laddering gives you periodic access to cash while still keeping part of your money in longer tenures.
Reading your FD portfolio like a professional
- Weighted average rate - this tells you the overall FD rate across all your deposits, weighted by principal, instead of looking at each FD in isolation.
- Maturity map - by grouping maturities by month, you get a quick view of upcoming liquidity and when large sums will be available.
- Total yearly interest - knowing how much interest you earn helps with budgeting and comparing FD against other options.
Limitations of this FD laddering and portfolio manager
- Uses simple interest based on rate and tenure. It does not model special compounding rules or step up structures.
- Does not include tax on interest, early withdrawal penalties or auto renewal options.
- Does not fetch live FD rates or compare specific banks or products.
